Book Your Accommodation Early

Beds go first. Prices rise as availability falls, and press coverage has already flagged steep Open-week rates across St Andrews and nearby towns. If you want to walk to the action, book now. If you’re price-sensitive, widen the map to Cupar, Leven, Dundee or the East Neuk villages and factor in bus or taxi links.

When should you book?

As soon as your dates are fixed. The R&A confirmed St Andrews and the 2027 week in January 2025, so the clock is ticking. Central self-catering gives you kitchen space, a fridge for breakfasts, and flexibility on late finishes. Short Stay St Andrews has a dedicated Accommodation for the Open 2027 page with current booking notes and release timings for OTA listings.

Tips to keep costs sensible.

Stay Sunday to Thursday if you can. Share larger houses between friends. Book restaurants well ahead to avoid last-minute premium menus. If you plan a car, avoid unnecessary parking charges by using the event Park & Ride (see travel section below). Past Opens at St Andrews have relied on Park & Ride only, with no public parking at the Links; expect a similar model in 2027.

Secure Your Open Tickets and Hospitality

Tickets and hospitality sit with the R&A. With dates confirmed, the first step is to register your interest on the official site so you receive sale windows and product options the moment they publish. If you want hosted dining or reserved suites, enquire via The Open Experiences pages. Some authorised travel providers also bundle accommodation and official tickets, but always check that tickets are official before you pay.

If you’re new to Open ticketing, The R&A’s One Club is free to join and has historically offered early access windows and updates. Don’t wait for prices to drop; they rarely do for St Andrews. If hospitality is your plan, register and speak to a rep early.

Plan Your Travel to St Andrews

St Andrews has no rail station. The nearest is Leuchars, about 10 minutes away by bus or taxi. The Stagecoach 99 bus runs frequent services between St Andrews, Leuchars and Dundee, including late-evening and night journeys on some schedules. In Open week, you can expect extra capacity and event signage, as in 2022. Check live timetables and plan to queue at peaks.

By air.

The easiest gateways are Edinburgh (EDI) and Dundee (DND), with Glasgow (GLA) as a third option. From EDI and GLA, most visitors either hire a car or take the train to Leuchars then the 99 bus to town.

By road and Park & Ride.

In 2022 there was no public parking at the Links. All spectator parking ran through Park & Ride sites, signposted from approach roads, with shuttle buses to the course. Expect the same principle in 2027 and follow event signage rather than your sat-nav. Local and national operators will publish details closer to the week.

Rail caveat.

In 2022, reduced ScotRail timetables led to advice not to travel by rail on key days. That was specific to that summer’s industrial issues, but it shows why you should check transport alerts a week out and again the day before you travel.

What to Pack for the Open

Pack for mixed Scottish summer weather: average highs hover around 17–18°C, with sea breezes and a real chance of showers. Bring a light waterproof, a warm mid-layer, a hat, and comfortable shoes for long days on your feet. A small backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle and a power bank all help. Binoculars are a bonus on busy holes. If you’re playing golf as well, add soft-spikes and a compact umbrella.

Where to Eat and Stay During the Open

St Andrews restaurants and pubs book out early in Open week. Hold a few reservations that match your likely finish times and cancel politely if your plans change. For easy options near the courses, the Links Clubhouse is set for a pre-Open upgrade and expansion, with improved cafe and bag-drop facilities; that should help with breakfast, coffee and post-round plates without crossing town. For variety, day-trip down the coast to the East Neuk for seafood and quieter streets.

If you want to walk to the Old Course, base yourself close to the West Sands side of town. If you prefer space and parking, the East Neuk or Dundee provide value and straightforward bus links. Short Stay St Andrews lists central flats and houses and shares release timings for Open-week stock on its dedicated page.
