That short distance removes a surprising amount of organisation from the week. There is no need to load several sets of clubs into cars, organise taxis for a full group or nominate someone to drive after the round. Early starters can leave when they need to, while the rest of the group follows later.
The Old Course ballot is drawn two days before play. Keeping one or two days flexible gives your group room to move another round or rearrange plans when a tee time becomes available. Ballot results are published by St Andrews Links two days ahead.
A walkable property makes a successful ballot easier to handle. You can reach the first tee without reorganising cars or transfers at short notice. If the ballot does not go your way, the New, Jubilee, Eden and Strathtyrum courses give you strong alternatives within the same Links complex.
Accommodation does not include or guarantee an Old Course tee time. Tee times must be secured separately through St Andrews Links or an authorised golf provider.
The Old Course sits at the western edge of central St Andrews, beside West Sands and within walking distance of the restaurants and bars around Golf Place, North Street, Market Street and South Street.
That location works well when the group wants to stay out after the round without coordinating lifts home. It also gives non-golfing partners, friends and family direct access to the town and beach while play is under way.
A two-ball may want a central apartment with two bedrooms and a short walk to the Links. A group of eight needs a different setup, with enough bathrooms, seating and dining space to avoid turning every morning into a queue.
Selected properties offer bedrooms that can be prepared as a king or two singles. This gives golf groups a more useful arrangement than permanent double beds. Larger homes include several bedrooms and bathrooms, with enough room for the group to stay at one address rather than splitting across separate bookings.
Golf trips bring more equipment than an ordinary weekend away. Selected homes include lockable storage, entrance halls or utility areas where clubs and shoes can be kept away from the main living space.

Avoid stacking every day with an early tee time and a second round at the opposite end of Fife. A Kingsbarns morning followed by an evening in St Andrews works easily. Trying to cross from one side of the coast to the other between tightly spaced rounds creates pressure the trip does not need.
Staying in town also gives you several St Andrews Links courses as alternatives when plans change. This is useful when the group wants another round without adding a longer journey.
Selected golf properties include private or allocated parking. For central stays without a dedicated space, Murray Place has 40 free spaces and sits close to the Old Course side of town. Petheram Bridge provides 300 free spaces near North Haugh and the town centre.
Bruce Embankment is beside the Links and West Sands. It operates with seasonal charges from 1 April to 30 September. Parking rules and charges change, so use the signs and ticket machines at the car park as the current source of information.
For a group carrying several sets of clubs, unload at the accommodation first rather than hauling bags across town from a long-stay car park.
Leuchars is the nearest railway station to St Andrews. A taxi with enough luggage capacity is the simplest onward option for groups arriving with clubs.
St Andrews Links also offers club hire. Advance booking is recommended because availability is limited for requests made on the day.
Ordinary spring and summer golf weekends often need booking two to three months ahead, particularly for larger homes, flexible single beds, several bathrooms or accommodation within walking distance of the Old Course.
Major championships require far more notice. The Open returns to St Andrews from 11 to 18 July 2027, when the Old Course will host the Championship for the 31st time. Accommodation demand will extend beyond the tournament dates as visitors, staff and suppliers arrive in the town.
Homes near the Links and larger properties for groups will be among the earliest to fill. Treat The Open as a separate booking window rather than applying the usual two or three-month guidance.
Shorter gaps sometimes appear between existing reservations. These are useful for last-minute golf breaks when the group has flexible dates and tee times already available.
