Kingsbarns Golf Links – Visitor Guide, Tee Times & Green Fees

Kingsbarns sits seven miles down the coast from St Andrews on a sweep of shoreline where every hole meets the sea. It’s a modern links by Kyle Phillips, opened in 2000, and it has climbed into the world’s top-100 lists on the strength of its setting and conditioning. Par is 72. Yardage pushes past 7,200 from the back tees.

Why Kingsbarns Is One of Scotland’s Top Golf Courses

The course runs for 1.8 miles along the North Sea. Elevation changes give you high tees, low fairways, and green sites draped over the rocks. It looks dramatic and plays fair. That’s why global rankings place it among the best you can play, with Golf Digest listing it 22nd in the world in the 2024–2025 cycle. It also co-hosts the Alfred Dunhill Links each autumn, alongside the Old Course and Carnoustie, and hosted the 2017 Women’s British Open.

Design credentials help. Phillips’ brief was classic links strategy with modern presentation. Narrowing angles, clever bunkers, and wind exposure do the work. Locals rate it because the test holds up in any weather, yet first-timers still find room to play. It feels big, but it isn’t brutal.

Kingsbarns vs Old Course: Which to choose?

They offer different kinds of joy. The Old Course is historic, subtle and quirky, with shared greens and crossing lines. Kingsbarns is contemporary, scenic and more straightforward off the tee. If your diary allows, book both. If you need a guaranteed round without a ballot, Kingsbarns is the simple win.

Getting there from St Andrews

The clubhouse sits around 15 minutes’ drive from town. It’s an easy coast road run, with clear parking on site and signposted access from the A917.

How to Book a Tee Time at Kingsbarns

There are two routes: advance bookings and last-minute online slots.

Advance bookings.

Kingsbarns opens next-season tee times from 1 June each year. You deal directly with the reservations team. Payment is taken within 48 hours once your time is confirmed. If you’re planning a multi-course trip, secure this first, then build the rest around it.

Last-minute online bookings.

A small pool of times goes online at rack rate up to three days ahead. Handy if you’re already in Fife and spot a clear-weather window. These are first-come, first-served though.

Season and closures.

Kingsbarns runs a spring – autumn season and closes over winter for turf protection. For 2025, the course is operating from 29 March to 9 November. Check the course site for any day-to-day updates.

Caddies.

Strongly recommended on a first visit. Caddies are independent contractors; request one when you book to avoid disappointment. The current individual caddie fee is £70 plus gratuity. Mobility buggies are limited and must be driven by a caddie; pre-book if required.

Is Kingsbarns open year-round?

No. The course closes for winter and reopens in spring. The 2025 operating dates run 29th March – 9th November, with the course reopening on the 30th March 2026. Winter office hours continue for enquiries, but the course itself rests.

Course Layout, Scenery & What to Expect

Kingsbarns is a walking course set over rolling linksland where the wind changes the shapes you see. Tees present clean sightlines; bunkers ask for a choice rather than punish at random. Several greens have bold internal contours, so landing areas matter. When the breeze comes in from the North Sea, use the ground. Flighting short and running the ball up is often the right play.

Practice is easy. The range, short-game area and practice bunker sit a short walk from the 1st tee, and complimentary balls are laid out for players. Locker lounges, showers and a smart clubhouse bar keep the day smooth before and after your round.

Eat on site if you can. The clubhouse serves all-day plates and local drinks with wide sea views. It’s relaxed, friendly and useful when you’re moving between tee times and town.

Signature holes & links-style highlights

Expect drama on the shoreline. The par-3s play over rock and surf when the breeze is up, and the closing stretch carries the bay in view from tee to green. It’s the rare course where every hole sees the sea, which is as memorable as it sounds and part of why tournament golf returns each year for the Dunhill Links rotation.

Pace of play and handicaps

There’s no formal handicap restriction. The starter asks for a sensible pace, with a guideline around 4 hours and 40 minutes. If you’re newer to links golf, pick appropriate tees and consider a caddie for lines and wind.

Where to Stay Near Kingsbarns Golf Links

Short Stay St Andrews manages self-catering flats and houses in St Andrews and across the East Neuk, including Kingsbarns, so you can tailor for two-balls, four-balls or full groups. Book a base with parking and room for clubs, then anchor your tee times around the forecast.
