Why Elie is famous for its beaches

Elie Harbour and Earlsferry sit on the same south-facing bay. At low tide the sands run almost a mile, with beach huts, dunes and a long shallow shelf that suits paddling. The strand is popular with families and first-time watersports because the bay stays sheltered.

Quality is recognised. Elie Harbour holds Scotland’s Beach Award from Keep Scotland Beautiful, with seasonal RNLI lifeguards, toilets, first aid, disabled access and parking listed among the facilities.

With scenic sands and water sports, the harbour end is the busiest patch. Sand stays firm at low tide, so walking, running and family games feel easy. When the wind picks up, water users head for the more sheltered side of the bay.

Family facilities and parking info

You’ll find toilets at the harbour, with seasonal lifeguards on duty during peak months. Accessibility is improving year on year, and facilities are clearly signed on site and online. For a quieter setup with services, Ruby Bay on the east side has a car park with free daytime parking, overnight bays, and a modern toilet block with an accessible cubicle available 24/7 via a RADAR key. One unit stays open through the night.

If you plan a full day, Ruby Bay’s opening hours shift with the season, and there’s a small overnight charge for campervans.

Water sports hire

Elie Watersports runs from the harbour with hire and lessons. You can try stand up paddleboarding, sailing and windsurfing, plus canoes and pedal boats in season. Check the centre’s page for current activities and prices before you set off.

The Elie Beach sauna experience

Elie Seaside Sauna sits on the dunes above the harbour, with a full-length glass side that faces the bay. It’s a simple hot-cold ritual: warm up, then step straight onto the sand for a sea dip. Book online. One cabin, Dune, runs as private hire; the second, Shore, offers individual seats or full private bookings. Shared sessions are adults-only; under-18s can attend private hires with an adult.

Slots sell out on sunny weekends, so plan ahead. Bring swim shoes for stony patches and a towel you don’t mind getting sandy.

Camping and coastal stays near Elie Beach

Pitching on the main bathing beach or dunes isn’t appropriate, but Elie gives you two good legal options nearby. Ruby Bay has designated wild-camping pitches signposted from the car park, plus overnight toilets and clear guidance from the Fife Coast & Countryside Trust. The Trust also explains overnight rules for campervans and roof-tents in managed bays. Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, leave no trace, and use the waste points provided.

If you prefer a serviced site, Elie Holiday Park at Shell Bay is a short drive west behind the dunes, with tent pitches close to the beach and family facilities in the park. It’s the easy base for multi-day stays when you want showers, cafés and play areas as well as sand.

Tides, safety and best times to visit

Low tide gives the widest, firmest sand. Check a local tide table before you go and time swims for calmer conditions. Elie Harbour Beach is RNLI-lifeguarded in the main summer season; the RNLI page and social feeds publish season dates and safety advice each year. Swim between the flags when patrols are live.

Dogs are welcome for most of the year, though summer restrictions apply on the busiest sections; look for notices on the promenade and by the beach huts.

Other beaches near Elie

Ruby Bay sits under Lady’s Tower with rock pools and a small sandy cove. It now carries Scotland’s Beach Award and has a new toilet block and car park right above the shore. From here, you can pick up the Fife Coastal Path in either direction.

Shell Bay lies to the west by Elie Holiday Park. It’s a sweep of sand and dunes with café options in the park and easy access to the coastal path towards Kincraig and the Chain Walk. The holiday park’s pages carry practical details if you’re staying.

Earlsferry Beach forms the western half of the main bay and keeps a classic seaside feel with beach huts and open sand.
