St Andrews is at its prettiest in December: lights in the old streets, frost on the links and the sea glittering off West Sands. Here is how to make the most of a Christmas break in the town.
Christmas markets in and around St Andrews
The town’s festive markets are announced each autumn, so check dates before you travel. In recent years they have included markets organised by the town’s business improvement district, and a Christmas night market at Balgove Larder, the farm shop on the edge of town. Expect local food, crafts and gifts rather than a big city-style market, which is a large part of the charm.
Shopping on Market Street and South Street
The three main streets are full of independent shops, from tweed and cashmere to bookshops, delis and chocolatiers. It is easy to spend a morning wandering between them, with plenty of cafés for a warm drink.
Winter walks
- West Sands: two miles of beach, perfect for a bracing walk on a clear winter morning.
- The cathedral and the harbour: walk past the cathedral ruins down to the harbour and along the pier.
- The Fife Coastal Path: head east from town along the cliffs towards Kinkell for big views back over the bay.
Eating out
December is a popular month for meals out, especially at weekends. Book restaurants ahead, particularly for groups. Having your own kitchen also means you can do Christmas dinner your way. See our guide to where to eat in St Andrews.
Making it a festive stay
A holiday home gives everyone space to relax, with room for the tree, the presents and a proper Christmas lunch. Selected bookings can add a welcome hamper or celebration drinks, ready for when you arrive.
Book your stay
Christmas and New Year weeks are popular, so book early. Search homes for your dates.
