Why visit Kingsbarns

Kingsbarns sits on the Fife Coastal Path between Crail and St Andrews. The strand, known as Cambo Sands, runs for roughly two miles, backed by dunes and easy paths. It’s quieter than the town beaches yet simple to reach, with a managed car park just off the A917 and steps over the dunes to the sand.

There’s more than the beach. Kingsbarns Golf Links is a modern classic on the DP World Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links rota and hosted the 2017 Women’s British Open. It welcomes visiting golfers and is five minutes drive from the village.

A few minutes inland, Cambo Gardens serves vegetarian lunches in a walled-garden setting, while Kingsbarns Distillery pours whisky and gin tastings most days of the year. If you want a hot-cold dip, Wild Scottish Sauna runs bookable sessions right above the beach. It’s easy to fill a day without leaving the parish.

In winter you trade crowds for quiet – wrap up, walk the path, then warm through at the distillery café or the beach sauna.

Things to do & top attractions

Cambo Gardens and café

Ten minutes’ walk inland through woodland paths sit Cambo Gardens, with seasonal borders, woodland trails and a vegetarian café that runs daily, shifting to shorter hours in winter. It’s a gentle half-day: stroll the gardens, eat in the courtyard, then wander back to the beach for golden hour.

Kingsbarns Distillery & Darnley’s Gin

Tours run daily with a café and shop open from 09:30-16:30 and the visitor centre to 17:00 most days. Book a whisky tour, a gin session in the cottage next door, or both, then walk the farm tracks to the village. Check times on the booking page before you plan a tight itinerary.

Beach sauna

Wild Scottish Sauna perches above the shore with a glass wall facing the North Sea. Book a private or shared session online, bring swim shoes for pebbly patches, and alternate heat with a quick sea dip.

Eating and drinking close by

For a casual bite by the dunes, the Cheesy Toast Shack often operates at Kingsbarns (and year-round at East Sands, St Andrews). Opening shifts with weather and seasons, so check their pages on the day. In the village, the Inn at Kingsbarns serves evening meals on selected days – ideal if you’re walking back from the beach.

Kingsbarns Golf Links

Set along 1.8 miles of shoreline, Kingsbarns opened in 2000 under architect Kyle Phillips and quickly joined the elite. It co-hosts the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship each autumn with the Old Course and Carnoustie, and welcomed the 2017 Women’s British Open. There’s no private membership; visitors are welcome.

Booking tee times

Standard visitor times are bookable in advance via the club or trusted operators, while a last-minute online window releases a few rack-rate slots up to three days ahead. If your dates are fixed, plan early; if you’re flexible, watch the late window for gaps. Caddies are available and strongly recommended on a first visit.

What to expect on the course

You’ll play a modern links shaped into natural folds that fall to the sea. Expect strategic options rather than brute force, with standout waterside holes later in the round. Independent guides rate it among Britain and Ireland’s top courses, and you’ll feel why when the wind freshens. The clubhouse is relaxed, with sea views and smart-casual dress.

Exploring Kingsbarns Beach

This is one of Fife’s finest walking beaches: long, level and framed by dunes. On busy day,s the visitors are asked not to overspill into passing places; arrive early or time your visit for sunset. Dogs are welcome year-round; keep them close to you around wildlife in the dunes.

For an easy stroll, aim for low to mid tide: you’ll find firm sand for long strides and rock-pooling at the Crail end. If you plan a longer point-to-point, be aware of a tidal pinch near Buddo Rock on the way to St Andrews. At high water that section is impassable on the shore, so check a tide table before you set off.

Suggested itineraries (day trips & longer stays)

One day. Park at Cambo Sands and walk south along the waterline before the crowds arrive. Break late morning at Cambo Gardens for lunch, then book a mid-afternoon session with Wild Scottish Sauna and alternate heat and sea. If you’ve packed clubs, swap the sauna for nine holes at the range or a late tee time on one of the St Andrews Links courses; otherwise, stay for sunset on the dunes.

Two days by the coast. Day one on the beach and gardens, with dinner at the Inn at Kingsbarns. Day two for a Fife Coastal Path leg: Kingsbarns to St Andrews (about 13.5 km), watching that Buddo Rock section on the tide, or Crail to Kingsbarns (9.5 km) if you prefer to walk into the village for lunch. Ride the 95 bus back to your start.

Golf-first weekend. Book Kingsbarns well ahead for your main round, then add the Castle Course or Jubilee in St Andrews for variety. If you miss your ideal tee time, use the club’s last-minute window three days out to grab a late slot. Keep a spare morning for photos along the shore if the wind gets up.

Practical tips that make a difference

Parking at the beach for under two hours is free or £2 all day; overnight motorhome bays are £10 with toilets on site. Pay by card or cash. If the car park is full, don’t use verges or passing places – wait for bays to free or shift plans to a coastal walk and bus back later. The 95 bus stops at Kingsbarns, The Square and runs into the evening. For food, check the Cheesy Toast Shack and Inn at Kingsbarns pages on the day; hours can vary with weather and season.
